Annika’s passion for movement and expression began at a young age, performing gymnastics on the back of a horse. Little did she know that her dreams would eventually take her up to the trapeze, where she would immerse herself in the world of contemporary circus.
In 2013, she began her studies at ETAGE in Berlin and later graduated from Codarts Circus Arts University in Rotterdam in 2019 with a Bachelor’s degree in Contemporary Circus Arts, specializing in mouth balance and dance trapeze.
Following her graduation, Annika participated in the BETA Circus program Illusionism and New Magic. During this two-year program, she studied alongside leading figures in the New Magic scene, such as Valentine Losseau (Cie 14:20) and Kalle Nio, where she explored stage illusion and the dramaturgical writing of magic.
Her affinity for absurd-comedy and unique approach to visual storytelling has led to circus performances such as RITA (2021), Hold on Light (2022), and her signature piece LOLA, with which she has been touring worldwide since 2020.
She has received research funding supported by the Fonds Darstellende Künste for her work on creating “new mobile spaces in contemporary circus” and for merging new magic methods with the dance trapeze.
As an artist and independent company, Annika navigates between theatre work, her own solo productions, and collaborations with various partners and collectives. Beyond her work as a performer, she is dedicated to presenting contemporary circus as a fully fledged art form — accessible and inclusive — capable of bringing people together and telling curious and touching stories that go beyond preconceived expectations of circus.

“...und dann wäre da noch Annika Hemmerling, eine charmante junge Frau, die mit viel Witz, Artistik, und Poesie für den Höhepunkt des Abends sorgt. Einamlig”
“Die Berlinerin Annika Hemmerling begeistert uns nicht nur am Trapez, sondern auch als kopfloser Rosenkavalier. Ich habe bisher keine Luftakrobatik-Act gesehen, der mich mit seiner Anmut und Stärke mehr verzaubert hat.”
